ties with Olivenite and like this mineral it is a decomposition product of other copper compounds.
Limonite:
Iron Oxide, containing 59.8% Iron. This mineral occurs massive and
earthy stalactitic, and the composition and crystallization are but
imperfectly known. It is an
important iron ore and called by the trade "brown hematite." It is
brown on a fresh fracture, though the surface of many specimens is
shmy black as though varnished.
Although containing less iron than Hematite, on acount of its
cheapness and the ease with which it works in the furnace, Limonite
is an important ore of this metal. It occurs abundantly and in many
localities.
Linnaeite: A
Sulphide of Cobalt. Sulphur 42%, Cobalt 58 %. The cobalt is sometimes
replaced by nickel, iron or copper. It occurs in crystals, also
massive, color pale steel-gray, tarnishing copper-red. Occurs in
Prussia and Mineral Hill, Maryland.
Linarite: A
basic Sulphate of Lead and Copper. Lead Oxide 56%, Cupric Oxide 20%.
Occurs in translucent elongated crystals and often tabular, is brittle
and luster vitreous. Color deep azure-blue. It is found in Cumberland,
Siberia, the Urals and at Linares, Spain, after which place it takes
its name.
Lithiophilite:
A Phosphate of Iron, Manganese and Lithium. Phosphorus Protoxide 45%,
Manganese Protoxide 45%. Very little Lithia or Iron. Occurs in
crystals, massive and compact. Color salmon-pink to clove-brown. Found
at Branchville, Conn., and at Tubbs' Farm, Norway, Maine, (see
Triphylite).
Lodestone: (see Magnetite).
Lollingite: Essentially
an Iron Diarsenide. Arsenic 73%, Iron 27%. Bismuth and Antimony are
sometimes present. It is usually massive, rarely in crystals, with
color silver-white or steel-gray. It occurs in Gunnison County,
Colorado, in star-shaped crystalline aggregates, in twins and
trillings, associated with Siderite and Barite. It is also found at
Paris, Maine; at Eden-ville and Monroe, N. Y., and at various mines in
North Carolina. This mineral belongs to the Marcasite group.
Ludlamite: Iron
Protoxide 53%, Phosphorus Pentoxide 30%. Occurs in small transparent
tabular crystals, luster brilliant, color bright green. It occurs along
the Rhine,
and near Truro, Cornwall, England.
