INTRODUCTORY.
'THESE notes on "Gems and Precious Stones" originally appeared in the " New South Wales Educational Gazette," at intervals from August, 1892, to May, 1894.
They were primarily intended for the use of our Public School Teachers, whose stations are, of course, as widespread as the Colony itself, in the hope that they might form the basis of object lessons, and also lead, perhaps, to discoveries of precious stones.
So extensive has been the correspondence which has resulted from these articles (some long out of print), that a few months ago I requested Mr. Smith to prepare them for publication in a separate form. This he has done, at the same time bringing the information up to date, and supplementing it where it was considered desirable to do so.
J. H. MAIDEN.
