CHAPTER XVII.
IOLITE.
NDER the name of lolite or Dichroite the mineralogist is familiar with a certain stone which is remarkable for its pleochroism, ro differences of tint when viewed in different directions. Occasionally it is cut and polished as a gem-stone, and is known to the jeweller as Saphir d'eau. The best specimens come from Ceylon, those from Bavaria being almost opaque. It is also found at Haddam, Connecticut. The usual colours are various shades of blue and violet, whence the name " lolite." The dark blue lolite is sometimes known as Lynx-sapphire, but this term is also occasionally applied to an indigo-blue variety of true sapphire.
