PHENAKITE.

F
late years this rare mineral has occasionally been used in Russia as a
gem-stone. The kind employed for this purpose is perfectly transparent
and colourless, exhibiting when skilfully cut great brilliancy, and
bearing much superficial resemblance to Diamond.
Phenakite—like
the Emerald, the Chrysoberyl, and Euclase—contains the rare metal
glucinum or beryllium. The finest Phenakite occurs in mica-schist at
Stretnisk, on the River Takowia, not far from Ekaterinburg, in the
Urals. It is also found in Norway, and at Pike's Peak, in Colorado, but
is, in all localities, a rather scarce mineral.
