CHAPTER XXX
RHODONITE.
Τ is the rose-red colour of this mineral which has gained for it the name of Rhodonite (from the Greek rhodon, a rose); and it is this colour also which gives it a place among ornamental stones. Rhodonite is an opaque silicate of manganese' found in masses, sometimes of considerable size, especially near Ekaterinburg, in the Urals. By the Russian lapidaries it is occasionally worked into vases and other ornamental objects. It also occurs at Kapink, in Hungary, where it is associated with black oxide of manganese, which gives a variegated colour to the stone. . It is only certain varieties of Rhodonite which can be advantageously used by the lapidary.
