HERE
is perhaps, no instinct implanted in the human breast more powerful
than the love of admiration ; there is certainly none more ancient and
universal. It is a passion more or less strongly developed in every one
of us—in the savage who rejoices in khis tattooing, and
barters his gold for beads and ostrich feathers ; in the Red Indian,
who regards the ring in his nose as the highest emblem of nobility ;
and equally in the fashionable lady, arrayed in all the beautiful
creations of Parisian millinery.
