The Torres Straits fishery dates back only to 1874. The boats work all the year round, and large profits have been made, but the ground is far more limited in extent than in the North-west Australian waters, and in the future the latter will be of far greater value. Indeed, this year (1886) all the boats have left Torres Straits to work on the north-western coast.
