During
1S91 the only surprise in gold and silver mining was the great
development at Creede, Colorado. With this exception no especially
important mining districts were developed.
A
matter of great significance to the mining industry of California is
the endeavor which is still continued to reestablish hydraulic mining.
This took the form of a conventiou, which petitioned Congress to
authorize the construction of restraining dams in the manner
recommended by the United States Engineer Corps, to place the
construction of these dams under the Engineer Corps of the United
States Army, and to promote hydraulic mining under the conditions that
the debris should be restrained in such dams. A bill to this effect has
passed the House of Representatives.
