Product.—During
1893 the gold product increased and the silver product declined. The
production of gold increased most markedly in the Cripple Creek
district of Colorado. The product and its distribution by States is
shown in the following tables.
It
should be stated that the fall in the price of silver had the
temporary effect of increasing the output during the earlier months of
1893, for the smelters used every effort to work up their stocks of
ores and sell before any further depreciation in price should take
place. The product of the first four months of 1894 shows the real
effect of the fall in silver, the product declined over 37-1/2 per
cent, compared with the corresponding first four months of 1893.
