GOLD AND SILVER.
By E. E. Preston, {Director of the Mini.)
Product.—During 1893 the gold product increased and the silver product declined. The production of gold increased most markedly in the Cripple Creek district of Colorado. The product and its distribution by States is shown in the following tables.
It should be stated that the fall in the price of silver had the temporary effect of increasing the output during the earlier months of 1893, for the smelters used every effort to work up their stocks of ores and sell before any further depreciation in price should take place. The product of the first four months of 1894 shows the real effect of the fall in silver, the product declined over 37-1/2 per cent, compared with the corresponding first four months of 1893.
Approximate distribution by producing States and Territories of the product of gold and silver in the United States, as estimated by the Director of the Mint.
