IMPORTS.
The
importation of precious stones into the United States in 1906, as
reported by the Bureau of Statistics, again shows a substantial
increase over that of the preceding year. This increase was chiefly in
unĀmounted cut diamonds, though there was also a substantial increase
in the importation of rough diamonds. The importations of glaziers'
points and pearls were also larger than 1905; diamond dust or bort and
miscellaneous precious stones showed a slight decrease. Almost the
whole imports of precious stones came through the port of New York, the
figures obtained for other ports amounting to only $28,988.
