Compared
with the mines report of 1907, this table indicates an increase of
$4,443,755 in gold and a decrease of 1,621,964 fine ounces of silver.
Twenty-three
States and Territories contributed to the production of gold. The rank
of the principal producers remained nearly as in 1907, and was as
follows: Colorado, Alaska, California, Nevada, South Dakota, Utah,
Montana, Arizona, and Idaho. The only difference consists in an
exchange of places between Utah and Montana. None of the other States
reached an output of $1,000,000.
Twenty-eight
States and Territories participated in the production of silver. The
rank of the principal producers was as follows: Montana, Nevada,
Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Arizona, and California. Colorado has lost the
first place to Montana, and has fallen below Nevada also.

Alaska.—The
gold production of Alaska in 1908 amounted to $19,292,818, and was less
than that of 1907 by $56,925. Though the total gold production was
about the same in the two years, there was in fact a large decrease in
the placer production of 1908, which was compensated for by a
corresponding increase in the output of the aurifer-
