GEMS AND PRECIOUS STONES.                            1059
PRODUCTION.
The total production of gems and precious stones during 1912 reported to the Survey showed a decrease in value of $23,970 from 1911. The value of the production in 1912, estimated in part from the quantities of rough mineral reported, was $319,722. There were large changes in the production of some minerals. Thus the output of opal increased from $1,875 in 1911 to $10,925 in 1912; kunzite, from $75 in 1911 to $18,000 in 1912; turquoise decreased from $44,751 in 1911 to $10,140 in 1912; chrysoprase and emerald also decreased. The statistics represent nearly the first values that the rough material brings or might he expected to bring. The same gem material may increase four or five times in value after elaboration and placing on the market.
