PLATINUM AND ALLIED METALS.                                   3
WORLD'S PRODUCTION.
Statements of the world's production of platinum and allied metals are, at best, estimates made from the most reliable information obtainable. The statistics embodied in the table below are believed to be fairly accurate, though possibly the figures for Colombia are too high by several thousand ounces of crude metal not actually mined during 1916 but drawn out by the high prices from stocks held by natives and merchants.
Estimated world's production of crude platinum, 1909-1916, in troy ounces.
a No basis for estimate.
IMPORTS.
The imports of platinum and allied metals for consumption in 1916 were about 5,000 ounces below the imports in 1915, but the value of the diminished quantity increased nearly a million dollars, as is shown by the table below, compiled by the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce, Department of Commerce.
Platinum and allied metals imported for consumption in the United States, 1915-1916.
