Nearly all the siliceous ore in three of the largest gold-producing States—Alaska, California, and South Dakota—yields only small val­ues in silver and is classed as gold ore. The siliceous ores from Colo­rado include some silver and gold-silver ores, but the great bulk of the siliceous ore is purely gold ore. The quantity of siliceous ore treated each year in these States and the average recovery in gold per ton is as follows:

The production of gold as a by-product of the smelting of copper ores sold or treated in 1917 was $7,051,523, against $8,286,290 in 1916, a decrease from 9.07 per cent of the total gold yield in 1916 to 8.75 per cent in 1917. The largest production was in Arizona, followed by Utah. Nevada, California, and Montana, in the order given. The
