Weatherbe, published by the Mining and Scientific Press, and "The history and development of gold dredging in Montana," by Hennen Jennings, with a chapter on placer mining methods and costs, by Charles Janin, published as Bulletin 121 of the Bureau of Mines. The most recent valuable contribution is " Gold dredging in the United States," by Charles Janin, published as Bulletin 127 of the Bureau of Mines.
The gold recovered in the United States and Alaska by 93 gold dredges in 1918 was $10,342,100, against $12,550,425 by 109 dredges in 1917. The decrease in 1918 was more than $2,200,000 and the total yield from dredges, which had been more than $12,200,000 for five consecutive years, 1913-1917, was the smallest since 1910. About 50 per cent of the decrease was owing to the decreased number of dredges operated in Alaska. Of the output in 1918, California produced $7,431,927 from 48 dredges, Alaska $1,425,000 from 28 dredges, Montana $334,750 from 3 dredges, Colorado $522,921 from 6 dredges, and Idaho $239,762 from 4 dredges. Three dredges operating in Oregon produced $387,740. No dredges were operated in 1918 in Nevada, Wyoming, South Dakota, or the Appalachian States.
Gold produced in the United States by dredges, 1896-1918.
In 1918 dry and siliceous ores, including true gold, gold-silver, and silver ores, and precious-metal ores not classed primarily as copper, lead, zinc, or mixed ores, produced $42,284,130 in gold, against $49,963,518 in gold in 1917 and $57,799,310 in 1916. The largest producers from this class of ore are in order of rank: Colorado, California, South Dakota, Nevada, Alaska, and Arizona.
The siliceous ores are in part free-milling (amalgamating), as in. Alaska, California, Arizona, and Oregon; both amalgamating and
