DREDGING.
The value of gold produced by dredging in the United States from the commercial beginning of the industry in 1896 to the end of 1921 has amounted, according to best available data, to $173,164,178, of which $124,999,984 came from California, $23,107,452 from Alaska, $9,555,494 from Montana, $6,666,769 from Colorado, $4,439,560 from Idaho, and $3,936,860 from Oregon. The production of gold from dredges in 1921 was the largest output since 1917, though the number of dredges operated in 1921 was 21 less than in 1918.
Brief details of dredging operations have been given in Mineral Resources in the mines report on gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc in the Western States and also in earlier reports of the Director of the Mint. A brief history of gold dredging in the United States was given in the general report on gold and silver for the year 1914, and the production of gold obtained by dredging in the United States and the number of dredges operated were given by States for each year from 1896 to the end of 1914. Further information is to be found in reports of geological surveys or mining officials of different States. A comprehensive and very useful report is conĀtained in Bulletin 57 of the California State Mining Bureau. Other valuable treatises are "Dredging for gold in California," by D'Arcy Weatherbe, published by the Mining and Scientific Press, and Bulletins 121 and 127 of the Bureau of Mines.
Of the output in 1921 California produced $7,756,787 from 35 dredges, Alaska $1,582,520 from 24 dredges, Montana $190,416 from 1 dredge, Colorado $337,950 from 3 dredges, Idaho $151,762 from 3 dredges, and Oregon $381,960 from 4 dredges. One dredge was operated below Silver City, in Lyon County, Nev., by the Gold Canyon
