Exclusive of the output of gold by the large producing operators $21,595,600 came from the operation of about 3,500 placer and deep mines, many of which produced between $100,000 and $300,000 each, Hundreds of mines, especially placer properties in California, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska, Arizona, and the Appalachian States, produced very small quantities of gold, and the average output of the smaller mines was $6,000.
The largest output of silver was that of the mines operated by the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., followed closely by the Chief ConsoliĀdated Mining Co. Of the mines enumerated in the subjoined list, five recovered silver from copper ore, six from lead ore, eight from dry and siliceous ores, three from lead ores and siliceous ores, one from zinc ore, one from pyritic ore, and one from lead-zinc ores. The California Rand mine, in California, and the Presidio mine, in Texas, were the largest producers of silver from ore that contained no appreciable quantity of any other metal. The output of the 25 properties was 37,037,100 ounces, or 60 per cent of the total producĀtion of silver in the United States in 1922. Seven of the largest producers were in Utah, four in Montana, four in Nevada, three in Arizona, three in Idaho, two in Colorado, and one each in California and Texas.
