Dorestad Fibula (near Utrecht), 800 AD, gold, gemstones

Brooch, inlaid with several gemstones, gold. Originally thought to be worn by a high official of the church because of its Christian symbolism such as the Greek and Andreas crosses. However it is now assumed that the local elite wanted to "evangelize" the world by wearing expensive, luxury Christian jewelry.

Several techniques and materials are used such as the cloisonné work. Most colored material is made of several types of glass (as was often the case in these times: glass and gemstones were both used), as well as pearls and Almandine (red Garnet).
